Care home staff came together to celebrate the improvements they have made to care homes across North West London.

The celebration was held on 7 March at City University of London following the conclusion of a leadership support programme that began last year. The programme’s aim was to improve leadership in care homes across the patch by supporting and mentoring care home managers to better support staff, residents and their families.

The programme was developed in partnership by My Home Life, NHS North West London CCGs and the local borough councils. In total, 51 care home managers have taken part in the programme which has led to better working across health and social care, improved leadership and staff morale leading to better care and support for residents and their families.

Care home managers who completed the evaluation reported:

  • 90% increase of confidence in their professional skills
  • 93% improvements in the quality of engagement with their staff
  • 87% reported improved quality of interaction between staff and residents

A care home manager who attended the event said:

“Relatives have made many positive comments about how the programme has improved the way we deliver care to them and their loved ones as we engage better – which is excellent. Importantly, the programme has enabled us to create better teamwork which has improved staff morale and engagement with residents and caring for their needs.”

Fiona Rowntree, Health and Social Care Workforce Lead for NHS North West London Clinical Commissioning Group said:

“It has been brilliant to see so many care home professionals share the positive impact that the leadership programme has had on them. The programme has helped to create many skilful leaders where staff are better led and are delivering better outcomes for our residents and their families”.

The success of the programme will see NHS North West London CCGs commission My Home Life to deliver further programmes from April onwards, enabling the programme to continue to deliver improved care to residents into the future.
