Don’t put it off: Get tested for coronavirus if you are having symptoms

Published on: 24th June 2020

If you have symptoms of coronavirus, make sure you get a test to check if you have the virus. Testing is free and you can quickly request one online.

Use NHS 111 online to check your symptoms first. The service checks if you might have coronavirus, and tells you what to do next. You can also ask for a coronavirus test here.

You should ask for a test if you have a high temperature, a new, continuous cough, or a loss or change to your sense of smell or taste. The same applies for someone you live with, if they are experiencing any of these symptoms. If you're asking for a test for someone else, and the person is aged 13 or over, check they're happy for you to ask for a test for them.

Either book an appointment at a drive-through or walk-through test site, or ask for a home test kit, which will be delivered to your home. The test usually involves taking a swab of the inside of your nose and the back of your throat, using a long cotton bud.

Dr M C Patel, Chair of Brent CCG and a local GP in North West London says:

“Remember, don’t wait. If you develop symptoms of coronavirus it’s important you get tested immediately for your own health and those that are around you.

We know that the risk of dying from the virus is particularly high in Black, Asian and Minority Ethnic (BAME) groups. We are a diverse community in North West London and encourage everyone to come forward so they can get the treatment they need.

You must get the test done in the first 5 days of having symptoms, so ask for one as soon as you start feeling unwell.”
